Cheap van ideas

The old Volvo estates are great for room but fuel costs and tax won't be cheap if your on a budget but i'd love one all the same although i use to own MkI mondeo estate and really liked it except for the lack of room it was a good car ..

Re:

Anyone remember the old Citroen CX estate? How cool would that be, rocking up at a retro ride in that!

FWIW, I've had 3 bikes in my Golf hatchback, with camping gear for the weekend! ;)

Transit sounds a great option, if they're reliable. Can fit it out however you want too

Are they easily broken into though?

Re:

A trailer would be a good idea come to think of it, save on the issue of parking spaces on my driveway, I could get 2 bikes upright and get a small ramp to wheel them down (save the old back :( )

Just need to get a towbar :)

Re:

Transit had a weakness with the rear doors where you could cut the loom and open the doors. The were recalled; and many owners have fitted after market loom protectors.

Our old MK6 has lately been the subject of several attempt to gain access, and you can see where they have attempted to crowbar it open. No joy. Very secure indeed. In fact it is one of the few vehicles I have been unable to break into fairly quickly.

Re:

If I do get a van it needs to be Transit Connect size, the driveway is too short for a full size transit.

Got a weeks holiday soon, I shall have a look around armed with my tape measure .

Ford transit connect vans are a lot bigger than the impression they give so should be more than up to the task in hand ..

A SWB Transit is less than a couple of feet longer than a Connect, and less than the same wider. Certainly worth being creative with your gates to get it onto your drive. If you get a high roof like ours you can seat three in the front and put a twin seat in the back with space to spare, and walk in and out the back without ducking, even at my height. (I just need to watch the roof cross members.)

Really usable space, and Transits ARE cheaper to maintain, thanks to the massive network of specialists and abundance of cheap parts.

In our family we have run transits since the sixties, and Sprinters/Vitos as well lately. It is my fault we went Merc as I am a Merc nut!

I can't really understand why anyone would find a Transit too 'wide', as they are no wider than most vehicles, and pretty much from the MK6 drive like cars.

Re:

I have a 99 Nissan Micra that has just enough room to get one door open on the drive, the drive really is that narrow, the length is better (ooer)

The house one side and a row of concrete post/fence panels the other side so cant make it any wider, my brother has a swb transit, he can pop around and we can measure.
