1990 FUCHS MTB build, finished.

Re:

Thanks sjh, started off quite fast but progress has ground to a halt. Waiting for the last few parts is always the hardest bit of a build.

Sure is, but often the most rewarding

Re:

Hubs arrived, rear built yesterday. Front today. It’s a fiddly job but quite therapeutic.

Re:

Wheels fitted, waiting on my xt front and rear mechs arriving and some more polishing to do. Other than that, I’ve got new grips and a new chain which I’ll fit after the mechs. Then weather permitting I’ll get a test ride.

Re:

Front mech arrived today, only waiting on the rear now. Being the impatient man that I am, and given that the weather was great today. I decided to finish the build and have a wee shakedown ride. I’ll swap out the lx rear mech for the xt once it arrives. Only covered 2-3 miles but it rides great! I’m very happy. Hope you guys like it. Cheers J.

Re:

XT rear mech arrived, fitted and checked. Build finished for now, although I have seen a nice crankset on the bay. As you all know, the need to fiddle with a build never really goes away. Small items are easier to hide from the wife too, if another frame comes in the post I think she might just explode!

Re: 1990 FUCHS build, finished.

Looks nice. :)

That XT is for 8 speeds, you will find nice casettes in 8 speeds from sram, but not in 7 speed. 7 speeds modern casettes are in the low range (or go for a DH casette).

I have the same saddle and it is ... :( Only few rides, about 200km and this happens

That saddle is for show pourposes only. Poor quality

Re:

Hi Madjh, I’ve got the 8 speed mech on 7 speed shifters. It works flawlessly. I’m fixed with the 7 speed cassette as the rear hub/frame is only a 130. Not sure I can fit an 8 speed in there. I’ve got five Flite Titanium saddles and they are all 20+yrs old. Some wear hear and there but they’ve held up pretty well. The one in the pic is dated 91, leather is perfect and logos still visible. I spend a lot of the time out the saddle though. It’s hilly around here. Im surprised your saddle has worn so quickly.

Re: 1990 FUCHS build, finished.

You have got the good Flite, mine is the new flite and it is different. So you will have no problems, in the 90s I owned one and was quite solid and good quality. Buy the new ones ... no.

If your rear wheel is for 7 speed, you cannot pass to 8 speed. You need to change the free wheel core to a 8-9-10 speed one. I think you will not have problems with the frame. I have done in the pass and now in a GT timberline. From 7 speed to 10 changing the rear wheel.

Re:

I couldn’t find a 130 hub that would take an 8 speed cassette. Found the matching set in 7 speed so built the wheels round those. I might change things in the future but just now I just ride it. It was meant to be a budget build. I blew the budget but only a little. I’ve already got my eye on a nice crankset for it (which I’ll have to hide from the wife!). If I start building wheels again I might need to seek alternative accommodation lol.
