The rear mech cable. It runs diagonally (stop top left, BB guide on right) under the down tube and will rattle even with doughnuts on it. looks odd to me. Am i missing something or is that how it should be? It has a standard under BB twin cable guide that does the job at present. I suppose I could pack that and lift it a little.
First Ride. Once I'd got used to the fact that i wasn't being followed by an old Land Rover(more on that later) , everything was fab and groovy.
Felt very similar to my explosif to be honest. The gearing was very forgiving, XT 8x3 period correct shifters were a joy. XT V brakes also excellent once i'd stopped and sorted the lack of toe-in squeal on the rear. The forks are lovely. Really smooth, not too much sag even with me on there and bearable bouncy bouncy on the long climb. On the way down they inspired confidence along with the geometry and quick steering short but high stem..
Now, the tyres. I know these were Karma and not wanting to upset the great god of all things, or Al for that matter, I still have to be true to my one self. To say they were somewhat slow would be being kind. I could hear the knobbles growling with each pedal stroke on the climb and produced a roar of almost Coleman's Fat bike proportions on tarmac. On sections I usually freewheel I found myself pedalling to maintain pace. I should imagine that they would be fine for agricultural or half-track use, but on a dry slightly loose trail or on the tarmac sections or on the gravel, or on the brakes and downhill changes of direction...... nuff said. Maybe my bulk didn't help.
Other than that and once i was aware of the limitations due to the above, fantastic. I love steeeeeel.
Thank you to all who took part in the love for the nearly-dead Kona. A phoenix has arisen!
Little THM knows nothing of this and think's he's on the Broom for Mayhem. Would Yellow Panaracers be too much? I have one in 2.1 just need another.......
Let's hope the boy likes it as much as i do. If not I may just hang on to it.
