Early 1993 Brodie "BHDT" eXpresso - FINISHED Part 2 :)

Re:

hi
i've been lurking. reading it all. my understanding is the frames were numbered in sequence as built.
but he did start a second/third? series of numbers when he was in legal disputes with kona.
these numbers have a `B' in front. B123 there is also a series of numbers with a period in front .123
don't know where these numbers started and stopped in the grand scheme of things. and when he did drop them
did he continue on with the the old series of numbers. jimbotoad is the one who knows the most about this stuff.
maybe he will add his two cents worth.
i've given up trying to identify models solely from characteristics. ever since the appearance of tig welded romax's
and fillet brazed climbmax's. the only true way to know what you have is to ask paul. i'd bet without those records
even he couldn't tell them apart.
maybe i'll rag on him a bit this weekend at the show.

Interesting info :) Aside from the frustration of trying to figure out what you have it is pretty cool that the frames so tricky to figure out. Adds to the fun of the restoration.

Re: Brodie Expresso Restoration Project ... Advice Welcome :)

so what the heck makes a sovereign, catalyst, expresso or climbmax what they are??? from what I can see in the details posted here, they all have the same cable routing, drop-outs and rear noodle guide. :?

I believe it's primarily the tubing selection.

Re: Brodie Expresso Restoration Project ... Advice Welcome :)

but my sovereign has the same custom but generic "Brodie 4130" tubing decal as the catalyst had. :?

so unless the original decals (if you can even confirm that) are still on the frame, or you contact Paul for identification, you can pretty much pass on a frame as any of the aforementioned models. only thing you can really say about it is that it's a Brodie.

Re: Brodie Expresso Restoration Project ... Advice Welcome :)

I have that 4130 decal to.

There are a couple of subtle changes on "some" sovereigns. There is a lugged-like variation and the curved supports variation that seem to guarantee its one. After that, as you say, it its darn hard to figure it out!

According to the 1994 Brodie Catalog the Sovereign and Expresso have the exact same geometry, just different tubing.

Re:

My 94 Sovereign has a curved seat stay bridge but I think this may have been a new feature on the post 93 (ish) models? If you look at the image from the 1990 catalogue the Sovereign had a straight bridge. Like Roy said, you can't be sure of anything :)

Very nice bike :)

I have that rear brace coming.

Got a hold of Paul Brodie so I should have my information soon.

Place your bets!

Re:

Still in a holding pattern on a colour choice ... hopefully I hear from Paul soon.

I cleaned up the components to see what was usable if I choose to restore it to its original condition/specs.

XT 735 Derailleurs are fine ... good tension.
Cranks have no logos, but cleaned up fine. I may powdercoat these anyway for something different.
Chainrings are ok ... outside is the worst. Bolts and spacers are trash.
27.2 Suntour Seatpost is good.
Can't save the Viscount Ti seat, but it is date stamped 1992.
