Simple First Project that won't break the bank

Raleigh are very unloved in the Retro MTB community (a total counterpoint to their roadies which are universally loved) so offer some great bargains:

or for a bit more you could have a pop for this Titanium beauty.

Muddy foxes are thin on the ground at the moment with not many people selling currently. With the only decent one on eBay being a massively overpriced Courier Mega.

You learn something new everyday. I didn't relaise GT carried on with the non- triple triangle frames for that long.

Diamond Back are worth a look as are Marin. Both brands are oddly underrated and bargains can regularly be found on Ebay. Dawes are also worth considering.

Yes, they are hugely under valued compared to some others. They handbuilt some quality frames from Reynolds Tubing with nice parts and they never make big money. Even Claud Butler seem to make more.

Do like the titanium raleigh but wouldn't want to do anything too that and looking forward to getting stuck into a project

It might sound a bit boring but you could do a lot worse than a Trek 830. Treks have passed the test of time and offer a good ride at a great price. It's also a really good bike for learning basic mechanic skills.

Re:

If you want a project my advice would be get down to your local household waste recycling centre. That's where my first retro build came from. I've also just picked up a 94 rockhopper ultra from my local tip as a pal needed a cheap bike to get to work, it was a cosmetically tatty but otherwise pretty good, hadn't seen alot of miles, I paid £15 for it replaced the perishables on it & he's riding it now!

Re:

As others have said you can get so much more retrobike for your money than that GT Outpost.

This diamondback viewtopic.php?f=4&t=380950 that I put in the ebay watch section is still available at £38, I'm guessing you're at the right end of the country if looking at buying the GT in Wimbledon.
