Cyclocross bikes are pretty fun to ride - heaps better handling on dirt than a road bike and can keep up with mtb's on tracks if you are skilled enough rider but beware not as rugged as a mtb (destroyed two Ultegra rear derailleurs in a month after getting jammed up by small twigs). Run my Kona on a 48/30 front chainrings and a road 11/25 rear cassette ( good enough for riding rough climbs) and running Maxxis Locust CX 35C tyres. 35C I think refers to the width of the tyre.
