Today's Ride

In fairness, there was a lot to like about last night's mini adventure. There's a great sense of freedom in being able to carry everything you need to be able to sleep (relatively) comfortably outdoors.

Fiona hates camping, though about once every five years she says "let's go camping" and i say "you hate camping". Then we go camping. At about 2.30am she digs me in the ribs to inform me that she hasn't slept a wink and that she hates camping. On the current count we're about two years away from our next trip. 😬
Had my life threatened by an irate Italian woman whilst tandem touring in Scotland . She also discovered quite quickly that she didn't really need to put any effort into pedalling , so much so that the front chain snapped . Fixing that by the side of the road in the dark whilst being verbally abused in 2 languages by the cause of the problem is one of my fondest memories .:D

Time to road test the British Eagle ATB I just picked up this week. So a trip to my local Sainsburys was just the thing.

First up the hill to the pedestrian railway bridge over the Mainline to Londown, a good test of the weight of a bike since there's a few steps to carry it up.

Then up the old sunken lane to Badger's Farm, quite a climb and a bit rooty in places

The bike did really well, felt nimble but still on knobblys so quite grippy.

I was tempted to ride down thse last two smaller flights of steps on the way back but fortunately decided to go back the long way on the road. The road way is much quicker and has a fast downhill stretch that I have managed over 50kph on my road bike, so a good test for the high speed stability of the BE. It passed and no trip to the A&E for me :D

Here is the bike as it is now after a stem and handlebar swap and new cables. It rides brilliantly and performs perfectly as an ATB. Just need to put a rack and some mudguards on.

Looks good to me. Glad it passed the test 👌

Great ride today, just under 30 miles local to home again. Felt like a teenager exploring, strung together bridleways, farm and forest tracks. Surprisingly some I haven’t done before. We’ve got a such a wealth of tracks and footpaths when you start to look for them.

The best part of the ride was at the end and I confess I behaved like a child for a short while. Buzzing the sign that tells you your speed and to slow down, I got it up to 30 before the traffic stopped me. Even better than this that was a few metres later seeing a Fred dressed like a tadpole on a sleek looking carbon fantastic emerge from the joining road. Immediately out of the saddle to make sure he fully dropped us in our baggy shorts and t shirts. I thoroughly enjoyed racing up to his back wheel and freewheeling a few times just to make sure he knew I was not dropped. I of course knew I only had about 1/2 a mile to go until a shandy stop so could sprint as hard as I liked!

River Nene super clear and clean at this spot.

Oof, hot and sweaty. Triple puncture - 1 going in 2 coming home - all Damien Omen's! Tubes filled with goo can't cope with 2 punctures at once, particularly if you don't manage to get all of the invasive item out of the tyre... so I had to pull the tube out anyway. Still, mustn't grumble, another 18 miles knocked off. Bike was creaking and squeaking a bit, so a service is in order...
