Single speed gearing enquiry

Velo, I remember you telling me about the ghost gear set up but couldn't quite picture it. That does sound really cool though.

good info here, specially perry, cheers, in the middle of fine tuning my daily courier, now its clear to see why not to use a half link chain, a halff link i might try though, and yeah getting dirty thoughts about a new frame with horizontals :o

Weird but somehow pleasing...
I've seen pictures of bigger chainrings used too (this isn't my bike)

funnily enough i built the other halfs bike over a year ago using a cheap 1/8 chain , old cassette sprocket and the plastic spacers from a few cassettes on a crappy old mtb and ive never had to retension it for her

the wheels even held with a cheap quick release

but now she wants another better bike ( well she wanted a new colour that wasnt black and as the bike is crappy i didnt see the point in painting it ) but she will now have to use a tensioner

I reckon 38:16 will be a bit stiff for the offroad sections of the Wobble, which comprises most of the course. I'm going with 32:16 and reckon I might be walking a few times.

If you don't have a tensioner and can't get one in time an old rear mech will serve the purpose and I expect you could get one for nothing from the LBS or the tip.

Excellent

Cheers Ed,shagged old mech and 18/38 it is then.Being assembled as I speak/type.Probably still be a bit stiff but not half as bad as 16/38!

Beep Beep's picture of the ghost gear is exactly as I describe.

Another point is it can be used with fixed gear in a vertical dropout frame, the only tensioning method that does not involve an excentric hub or BB in non horizontal dropout /track end frames.

...So I tried 18/38 thinking that as it was 2 extra teeth and therefore 1 complete link of chain, not so,now i'm half a link out and would require a tensioner which I don't currently have.

I would expect you to be out. The chain is only engaged on around 1/2 the teeth of the sprocket, so you have added one tooth.
