Thanks so much for reply on this.I have had similar problems in the past. In my case it was that the cable outer was not snugged fully into the Ergo body when I overhauled things and replaced the outers. It was really easy for the outer to be 1 or 2 mm off snug, especially as you tape the outer round the bend in the bars. Make a couple of clicks and it's enough tension to pull the outer snug.
It's a total pain, but unwrap the top of the bars, tension it all up (make a couple of clicks but don't pedal to allow the shift) re-tape the outer and re-wrap.
I'm pedantic about seating cable housings properly before wrapping tape and bartape.
To check, I've reassembled the shifter, fitted it to the handlebar and run a few tests (pushing the down shift lever), but nothing seems to be moving, and the gears are still misbehaving.
What a pain in the unmentionables . . .
