Just nipped out to pick up a cheap HG50 9sp chain. Checked online first and found halfords was cheapest and just up the road so....

Walked in asked and got charged £6 more than the online price. If i'd done click and collect I'd pay the online price too. Chap explained that they do a price match online but not in store unless somebody asks or does the click and collect. That 6 feet of walking he had to do must make all the difference at a POUND A FOOT!

Something to bear in mind when checking prices.

yep, done that. found out the prices were different, went onto my phone stood at the desk and ordered it online for collection in store.

Re:

Have experienced this kind of thing with Halfords too. Needed an emergency wheel and saw one advertised for about £33. Great, not too much of an outlay to get me commuting again. Got to the nearest store, having taken 3 buses and an hour to get there, only to be told by a miserable obstinate jobsworth git it was £49 and that was that – no matter that I'd busted a gut to get there after seeing it advertised at a specific price. His younger tech-savvy sidekick saw a way round though and used his own mobile to order it online and 'book delivery to the store for collection', for the £35 I saw it advertised at. Seems there are 2 different Halfords. Their prices advertised online bear no relation to instore.

Loads of stores do this now, Game is particularly bad for it, but they do explain it on their site though;
"Pricing on the Site may vary from GAME Store prices. In any instance where the online price is lower, Our stores will not be able to match the online price. All online promotions, bundles, offers and discounts apply to the Site only and do not apply to Our stores."
I needed a XBox controller a few weeks back and it was 20% more instore than online.

If there's a Curry's nearby, pop in there and reserve online if your phone can't get a signal :D
Curry's are another one for it :(

It's a bit galling when you make the trip after having checked the price online, they'll all be whining that the internet's killed their footfall when it comes to closing branches

From Halfords' site; "We will match in store if our online price is lower than our store price"

Re:

Sadly, I think it's a sign of the times, we see price obfuscation across all industries and market sectors. Look how complicated it is to compare tariffs for mobile phones and utilities, etc. and how difficult it is to get a firm price for a train or airline ticket and how the price varies wildly according when you travel and how far in advance you book.

Then there's nonsense cashback deals, multi buys, special offers and vouchers. And the little annoyances like the price labels in supermarkets, where you have similar items sold in different size packs and one will show the price per Kg and the other per 100g, so you have to a do some mental arithmetic to see which is the better deal.

It's all designed to make price comparison difficult and really gets on my pip.

Re:

In Halfords defence, I once bought 2 mtb slick tyres at a reduced price. The guy at the till then did a price comparison on his smart phone with the cheapest out there at the time and then price matched the tyres to that lower price. Effectively I got the tyres at 50% off the already marked down price :shock:

Everything depends on deals and the smarts of the operator. You win some you lose some :roll:
