Halfrauds servicing = avoid ?

Just been to halfords to buy a cassette lockring tool. I asked them if they would loosen it to save me doing it later.

After this i proceed to look at the helmets etc and let them carry on with it.

To my horror when i returned to the servicing desk he had mounted the lockring tool in a vice and proceeded to turn the wheel in the wrong direction (massively overtightening).

Of course i let him know hes doing it wrong and needs a chain whip.

At this point he had to get the manager to sort it out because it was done up too tight.

20 minutes later the lockring is off looking quite mangled (not happy).

In fairness they didnt charge me for the removal, but if its anything to go by I'm not taking my bike for a full service there.

Didn't charge you??? How about 'replaced my buggered cassette' to start with. One of the many things I love about bikes is that you can pretty much do it all yourself with relatively few tools - thus avoiding spotty oiks who do this kind of thing. Anything you can't do you send to justbackdated ;)

Anyway - go back and demand a replacement part I say.

Probably best to mention which Halfords it was as not all are the same. I could easily mention a dozen independent shops that employ people who can't be trusted to sit the right way on a toilet but that doesn't mean I damn all independent shops. Likewise people shouldn't tar all halfords with the numpty brush as I know a few very experienced guys gainfully employed by them.

it was a Halfords in Bradford.

I know that they have proper bike mechanics there. I think I was just unlucky and someone thought they would have a go.

the cassette looks ok but havent had a good look at wheel yet.
lockring isnt in a good way.

would have been really angry if he had messed up cassette (M770).
the wheel isnt a cheap one either mind.

If they just used normal tools to get the lockring off again then it's unlikely the freehub will be damaged, similarly the cassette.
Next time go to All Terrain in Shipley, just 5 mins further down the road.
Or PM me as I'm often in Bradford an I have all the tools you might need. :-)

Can't recommend Halfords Salisbury either;

A kid that works for us bought a BSO there, when he showed it to me, the bottom bracket was seriously loose (adjustable cups).

He took it back and told them to sort it - they had it for 4 days (!) and when he picked it up, they had replaced the cranks, but not touched the bottom bracket!

Took it back. Another 4 days, they've not touched the cranks (I placed some strategic dirt on them) and the BB is still shot - they had:

"replaced the BB, that play is normal"

Full refund. went elsewhere. Shocking.

The Kula I bought 2 years ago from the Farnborough branch was missing the bearing from non drive side BB cup, they proceeded to just tighten it to within an inch of it's life and it was still loose on delivery. Being an external BB I just undid it and took it apart once home, took it back the next day and they replaced the BB for a new one (which just happened to be exactly the same, a special order item and hidden in the stock room).

Looks like the cups need adjusting now as well.

Carl.

I've see quite a few cross-threaded BB's come out of various Halfords branches - but I've also come across some very helpfull Staff (though I generally find those who look like Skate Park Refugees are the most condescending towards Middle-aged Old Farts like myself...)

...bit like the Monty Python 'Record Player' sketch...
