Another of Saracen's Limited or Special Edition bikes by the sound of it.
Do you have any photos of it that you can post up?

There's one a few pages back on this thread, but it's from the wrong side so not the best. I'll try to remember to take some more next time it's out of the shed.

Found it!
Definitely looks like a 1989 Trekker Comp frame but paired with forks probably from the 1989 Tufftrax and all powder coated in Aegean Blue instead of the Spearmint Green of the 1989 Trekker Comp.
The decals are consistent with those used in 1989.
Makes me wonder if it was a Halfords exclusive model, or as you suggest a non catalogue parts bin special available through the dealer network. Saracen were pretty well known for this.

Whatever, it's a nice old Saracen anomaly that deserves its own build thread.

That's the one. It wouldn't have been a Halfords exclusive because I got it from a local independent shop (Harpenden Cycles). The '89 catalogue didn't include a standard Trekker and from what I've read the M500 groupset was new in '90 so you're probably right about it being a dealer network special part way through the year. There was another one the same on this site a couple of months ago in a thread about Peugeots.

Just got a 1997 Special Edition Team Saracen.

Looks all original apart from the seat and tyres. Luckily I have the tyres so will be putting those on after a strip down and clean.

Not the best picture, will take some more.

Isn't this just a standard 1989 Trekker? Had two of them until last year.

Re:

Yeah, I had a lovely one of those, same spec too. Just assumed it was the usual Saracen routine of chucking newer group sets at older frames? I guess by 1990 no one really wanted double U’s and the Trekker frame was too heavy to sell as a top end bike.

Had a black one at the same time so that’s three colours for the 89 frame!

Could well be the case. Only a Trekker Comp is pictured and has specification details included in the 1989/90 catalogue we have in the archive.
This could just be that the catalogue is an abridged document of the bikes which were available.

That's why threads like this are so useful.

Heres my 1995 BackTrax I picked up recently, its basically completely stock. Paint is unreal, needs tires!
