Dent free Dave Yates Barn find, with issues (Pg5)

Bummer about the crack, but if it were mine (and for free / beer money) then I'd get it fixed somehow (either tube replacement or maybe the sleeve would be easier and just as good structurally), and paint it however I wanted. I wouldn't save the paint because I don't like it that much, but can understand that other would like to keep it. Great looking bike though - I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out, will be a good one I think :)

I like the way he told you it was a custom..

I don't think the price is bad at all.

Regards to the paint, the colours the original owner chose wouldn't have been for me. Dave has confirmed its a custom build and colours are personal, you don't have to run with the original owners choice of colour to keep it in tune with the year of manufacture.

Its your money, and you have to love a bike to want ride it and keep it and make it yours. If you had said you loved the original colour way I would run with it, if not....sit back grab a drink and the world is your oyster........., the more colours the more expense, but you have a very trick frame right there...!

Absolutely this ^^^.

There is a BIG difference between road bikes and MTBs. With road bikes the original finish can be important / significant, especially if it was applied by someone no longer alive. There may be certain MTB manufacturers where this could be said to be true, but I don't think any of the British made bikes fall into that category... well maybe a few Zinn's and the ultra rare green black Overbury's. But, for the mostpart as long as you have a few photo's of the original paint, JIC you or someone else wishes to restore it then the frame and the tubes and the builder are of far more significance than the original paint.

Orange formulas..... is my sore point, I just cant bring myself to wanta mess with the formula and get it wrong... Quality custom race frames like this is a formula for displaying our best at the time, and BOTY material too. And I really was impressed with the repair price too.

Old but not forgotten thread bump :)

Wondering how this is coming along, if at all. Any updates?

 it’s tucked up safe and sound, I’ve changed my mind a zillion times and collected a ton of parts for it over the past 18 months
I’ve sat and looked/fondled the frame countless times over the months and marvelled at the tubing and craftmanship in equally measures

I’ve got a mint pair of really early Hügi hubs which has the most rediculously loud clicky hub I’ve ever heard... akin to a Gatling Gun

However my biggest sticking point is the colour which I just can’t decide onupon

Rattle can matt black... job done.

Trouble is it’d then look like almost every other modern bike
To be honest I’ll pass up on your suggestion if you don’t mind.

Yeah, im faced with the same dilema with my Donohue, wether to get the original paint job redone or pick a new fresh colour :? are you getting the frame painted with the repair or have you had it repaired already?
