Dent free Dave Yates Barn find, with issues (Pg5)

Re:

Got this back from Dave Yates today

Hi Nick
Thanks for your email, I can confirm that the frame was built in 1991 using Max OR ATB
As for the model, it predates your suggestions and technically it’s “no particular model”.
The cost for the seat tube would be £220 + any braze-ons required on the tube.
The whole frame would then need to be re-sprayed, we could not just re-paint the seat tube.
Regards

Dave Yates Cycles

Granted it doesn't state the type of tubing being used but never the less I'm guessing at twice the price of a standard seat tube on his website its not going to be a gas pipe. (but I'll find out) also really considering staying with the same colour ways as its growing on me, and with bright new vibrant paint it should be a real eye catcher in a 1990's way.

Re:

Put a long seat pin in, and clamp it with the existing seat clamp and add two extra clamps below the crack and clamp them up. Should hold it all together. Bodge-tastic! :P

It doesnt sound too expensive to me, and you are also getting the frame restored to new including custom paint of your choice. I say go for it, make it yours 8)

I like the way he told you it was a custom..

I don't think the price is bad at all.

Regards to the paint, the colours the original owner chose wouldn't have been for me. Dave has confirmed its a custom build and colours are personal, you don't have to run with the original owners choice of colour to keep it in tune with the year of manufacture.

Its your money, and you have to love a bike to want ride it and keep it and make it yours. If you had said you loved the original colour way I would run with it, if not....sit back grab a drink and the world is your oyster........., the more colours the more expense, but you have a very trick frame right there...!

Absolutely this ^^^.

There is a BIG difference between road bikes and MTBs. With road bikes the original finish can be important / significant, especially if it was applied by someone no longer alive. There may be certain MTB manufacturers where this could be said to be true, but I don't think any of the British made bikes fall into that category... well maybe a few Zinn's and the ultra rare green black Overbury's. But, for the mostpart as long as you have a few photo's of the original paint, JIC you or someone else wishes to restore it then the frame and the tubes and the builder are of far more significance than the original paint.

If it's a re-paint it needs, then go for it :-)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.... but I don't think Dave Yates stocks those earlier font decals anymore... I'm guessing Gil would though :-)

£130 done at Argos in Reynolds 753

Really? Sounds well cheap, esp 753 which I thought was nay on impossible to find and difficult to work with, silver braze etc

Bike guys are selling too cheap man, what other skilled trades can do anything worth while for a 130 inc the parts!
