Cycling: is there a spiritual side to it?

I think it is regarded as pseudo science and has not been taken seriously. But then more ideas in science were initially rejected.

He does have some criticisms on modern science that I found interesting. He did a Ted talk on it.

Yes. I was aware of its reputation but I was curious. I guess I felt like it's a bit like Plato's theory of forms but dressed up in scientific lingo, and with worthless references to quantum mechanics thrown in; although he at least attempted a theory of how forms change, just not a very convincing one.

Sad, maybe one day I'll read it. I am curious

No one actually knows how electricity works, right?

I liked Stephen Wright's joke on electricity: I never seen electricity, when I get the bill from the electricity company, I just write on it; sorry, never seen any.

Great thread, I’d have to say I’m in the ‘yes’ camp and say a good ride can be spiritual. I’m not in any way religious. The majority of my riding is solitary, just me, my bike and the outdoors. Trail riding rates highest. Not to say a quite night ride through the city neighborhood doesn’t rate very close for me. One of my favorite rides is a road ride through mostly quiet country roads and much of it alongside the ocean.

But, yes, getting out on my own, fresh air, great views and enjoying that feeling of freedom that can only be experienced while riding a standard chain driven bicycle is good for my spirit 😁

I think I have more of a problem with the modern world's dead concept of 'matter' than the concept of 'spirit' but ideas about 'matter' will change over time. They are already. That might help diminish the unhappy 'external being' that can mysteriously 'comprehend things so vividly' conception.
I forgot to mention, I really like this view that it is our concept of matter that needs revision and could help us understand the human condition.

The feeling of your body converting fuel into energy and output, legs comfortably spinning almost effortlessly, breathing in loads of fresh air, bike gliding smoothly and quietly, tyres droning, with a warm breeze passing over you is magic.
When your body is occupied in a repetitive natural movement it frees up your mind.
Its a good time to practice the gentle art of re-framing any troubles in life.
