Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

Definitely agree on the tange 1200 fork. They are period correct and not too expensive.

For the seatpost, I highly recommend Tick Bicycle parts. He customed fabricated me an extra long post with a wider diameter tip so I could use a brooks without a shim...plus it is super thick and un-bedable chrome plated steel, which while weighing a tonne, looks more period correct then aluminum.

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

Well, the canti's are sorted and on their way.
I found a very nice pair of Mafacs on the local marketplace.
And the handlebars too, found a pair of Honda CB200.

Now I have to decide which way to go with mounting the canti's.
My favourite option are the Moots mounts, but they are very hard to find.
There is no substitute for those that I know off, except for making them myself.
Another option is brazing bosses, I would love o learn that.

What way would you guys go or are there other ways?

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica [quick setup pag 3]

Yesterday I recieved the Mafacs and the handlebars.
I couldn't wqot for all the parts to aarive wo had to put a few parts on the frame to get an idea of how it would look.
I used some wheels of my other bikes because my wheelset is still on its way. It had to be two front wheels, as the spacing is offcourse to narrow for a 135mm wheel.

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

I recieved my wheelset yesterday, very happy with it!
It looks like it hasn't been used for more than a few hundred miles.
The rims are perfect, cogs barely used and hubs with decals sin smootly.
Just need to clean it up a little and replace the rim decals I allready ordered.

I gave the other parts a good clean, I might polish some part to get it a little more shiny.
The cranks sure need some more polishing or even sanding.

Nice parts man!!

I assume paint is coming soon? I learned the hard way that you have to do the following. Maybe you know all this but I sure didn't! (Aside of course from cold setting the stays wider)

-Reinforce the internal seattube so the butting extends lower. Otherwise a long post will snap the frame..
-Face the headtube and bb.. they are always off..you can do this after paint but it might pull the paint off.
-check the frame alignment.. Can be "persuaded back square..
-drill out the seatpost collar qr hole a bit as it is too small diameter for a campy qr

Good luck with it! Our bikes are sort of peas in a pod!
