Cannondale M500 (I think) and Pepperoni headset Q

Hi, I hope you can help. I bought a c'dale frame and fork separately on fleabay a while back and I'd like to get them built up. However the headtube is just plain weird! I'd like to find a headset to get this fixed. (I have pictures but as this is my first post on here I'm not allowed! )

The problem is:
  • There's very little thread at the top of the steerer.
There's not enough thread depth to get the threaded race onto the bearings
There is a groove on the back of the threaded steerer
    The steerer is stamped "01 1618 90"
So, does this headtube require a specific headset? A bike I saw outside a shop, a nicely looked after old 'dale, seemed to have an Aheadset-style compression stack and a locknut on top, with the brake hanger bolted on for additional securing. Perhaps that's what I need?

Many thanks in advance, al.

kinda sounds like your streerer is to short for your frames headtube- post a pic now you should be able to now.

Hi Alan and welcome
Use photobucket to get pics on here , i find it easier.
It does sound like you have the wrong forks for the frame :?
Pics will help us to help you though dude.
nice to have another Edinburger on here :D

Here's the pictures!

Hi, thanks for your replies. I think it is the correct steerer and I need a different headset. Seems like the h/s I need is a bit of a 'missing link' in the evolution from threaded to Aheadset - see the bottom picture of a bike I saw recently. Looks like the top race is unthreaded, compressed by the top nut and the spacers, held in place by the hanger clamp.

Cheers, al.

This headset doesn't fit...

This steerer thread is very short...

Perhaps this is what I need!? But what is it!?

try one of the following
get a bit more thread on the steerer
a good bike shop should be able to do it for you ,mebee gilchrist's down
london road doubt if the monkeys at the co-op will know what your talking about

or hybrib it with a top race from an aheadset
is it 1", 1 1/8" ,or 1 1/4"

welcome

were you on MTB scotland ?

M500

Looks like the same as my M500( 1996) Purple Matt.

My frame came with a XT 1" headset. i had to use a quill stem as the steerer was so short brand new!

Bike weighs nothing built up. This is my main bike and I would not swap it for anything.
