Just berthing a BP tanker "somewhere in northern europe".

Ships are usually not advised to mix steel and nylon wires, mainly 'cos steel doesn't strech and nylon will by almost 1/3 original length.

Big ships use 4 stern lines 2 breast lines 2 forward running lines, 4 head lines 2 forward breasts and 2 rear running lines.

The Tanker with 150000 tonnes of crude had just suggested using 2 wire and 2 nylon stern lines.

Honestly,

I've worked in the offshore oil and gas industry for over a decade and can honestly that doesn't suprise me in the slightest!!! Decisions like that are why he's a Captain and you aren't. Whilst you're pissing around following procedures and looking for equipment, people like him are getting the job done. Time is money!!!

It is, I was being sarcastic!!! My point being that those who put deadlines and money before doing the job properly are the ones that get on in that industry. Because they are the doers, the yes men, they bring in the money.

I'd hoped my sarcasm detector wasn't acting up and I'd guessed correctly ;)

Surprised at BP though, they're usually so good about safety and that. .

A mates dad was a rig pilot[or something like that]managed to drink himself to death.
This seems an occupational hazard in the offshore industry :?

You can have it if you want, I'm back off to real ships very soon. :D
