I've been using a 9spd mech with a 5spd freewheel, 8spd chain and 6psd indexed downtube shifter

Its all fine.

But dont tell anyone...

Just fitted Campag 10 speed ergos to shift 8 Speed Shimano 8 speed myself. AND because this was not subversive enough.... I have put Stronglight rings on Shimano cranks!

Groupset - Schmoupset. I have never been keen on them!
