In response to the op question. Yes data collection is a thing. Tin hat? No. Careful? Yes. Successful in staying private? In this day and age not a chance. Of course it's a spy in your house, as is the internet, phone, laptop, all your smart crap because the journey to the light switch is just too arduous. It seems the younger you are regarding this, the less concerned you are about it.

My father in law doesn't have - and won't use - online banking. Such a shame that some banks are eroding the ability of people to just live.....
