XC Structural Integrity

Hello

I have a Dawes Edge One single speed MTB in good condition carbon seat post & bars with 26x1.95 CST MTB Tyres @ 10.6 kg rider 14 stone.

In general & because of 23 mm thread hub bolts not ' spindles' & gauging my riding style to steel forks & AFAIK double walled but basic original rims wanted to ask is this 17.5 size bike up to relatively high speed XC riding mostly woods Inc a few downhill sections with air but not jumps nor intend to, just only smoothish riding no attempts at trial type riding etc.

Should there be specific caution I intend to administer or is bike not upto to mild to medium XC being old & carrying weight including sometimes 3 kg rucksack hydration.

Whilst I know ' stuff' better to ask here of those who have far more insight into thread title, in that answers may mean getting another bike keeping the dawes for winter hack general dogs body bike.

Pic is bike from internet but not my actual bike.

Helpful replies most appreciated.

Thanks

Here's the actual bike, I've measured the middle of the handlebar to the middle of the cushion of the seat & it's about 3 inches taller than the bars with the intention of purchasing the 110 & 20 degree stem to the current 90 that is set about right, the seat I intend to move back 10 mm to take adv of the rose flex seat post.

Anything from an inch equilibrium to level would be fine.

Are my calculations about right as I don't send sub £50 items back to the shop.

If your interested bikes had

New headset
Bars grips stem
Many bolts
Rose carbon flex post
Sealed Shimano BB
Trutativ crank & cog X8 chain
Is white industries freewheel
Short nosed saddle (recommended)
New tyres & tubes
New brakes & jaguar pads
Pedols X9

Better pedols & maybe wheels future as surely spindles are stronger & I think their the original wheels assumes double wall but only about 17 mm internal which means not able to have bigger tyres which are needed for comfort, could fit 2.35 max I'd say, hence the question of what to search bar for for single speed 26 rear wheel.

Mat black DIY paint job over inc stickers for protection & presentable as I don't care for pretty paint jobs far to clumsy.

Any pointers most welcome which is why I'm here to try & avoid easy purchase mistakes.

Also if I do have to sell it to find a more suitable bike whats its worth on gumtree as I don't really have the room for three bikes, I fancy if required making a FS bike into single speed or a plus size 2.8 Tyre HT Inc solid forks as the ebike has a nice da bomb double tensioner to use when it likely fails 2024.

Apologies long post giving details invokes more answers.

Thanks

Update its a shame there's no edit function on retro site

Wheel hubs appear to be 135 & 105 suspect 110 the new bolts req can't find from months of ad hok looking & there regeon of £30!

New regular wheels can be had for £59 on bankrupt bike parts but 1.75 isn't an upgrade, apparently 1.9 are around somewhere which would be good for 2.10 tyres prefer wider but seams a lost cause, my thoughts are that there's people on here that are experts on 26 wheels but perhaps dedicated single speed 26 are the preferable rocking horse S & thus this would invoke selling after this summer blasts as must gain some use after upgrading Inc LBS work as I'm not mechanically minded I break cranks ect (

If anyone knows a shop specializing in 26 knowledge of single speed fitment to details given then please provide a link.

The truth is I'd rather keep the bike with new wheels 1.9 internal rim minium & 2.10 maxxis pace tyres, & the new stem geometry dialled & don't mind the cost of £ 100 to £ 200 as would keep the bike as it's for leisure & shopping as the running costs compared to others near peanuts, which is what's required as out of work.

Like these but 135 110 but as above would pay for Mavic type lightweight as looking to have bike breach the magic 10 kg.

I wouldn't worry about strength at all. I ride my Edge with panniers, rack and camping gear.
As for wheels, plenty are still available, you need a 135 rear and normal 100 front. Rims can be had from Spa Cycles, have a look at Sputniks, which are bombproof rims used by the touring community. 1.9 is AWFULLY wide for a rim, typically they are 17-22mm inside (bead-bead). The old 1.75 are cheap sections without the box structure.

Nice mash up!

Is yours a single speed?

Want internal rim size 19 mm minium preferable 23 & 20 would be good, you think 19 mm wide as I assumed 1.9 rims refers to 19 mm wide internal & 1.75 internal 17.5 mm.

Yours appears to have spindles mine has thread size 23 mm bolts that don't inspire confidence are old & can't find them for want of trying, bike can take 25 mm bolts but the cup washers serrated or not I can't find nor the bolts with 18 mm est dome heads.

& when I say smooth riding I mean still fast but just under my capacity to avoid breaking bones or the bike.

Regards the stem I don't think that needs answering now as that 110 twenty degree will suffice to create optimum setup.

I have a tightrope to consider regards rim internal & tyre pressure verses riding conditions especially as no suspension whilst others ride 17 mm with confidence I need more than 17 mm to compensate all factors with 19 mm I'd go 2.10 psi mid twenties est 20 mm psi low twenties on 2.2/3 & 23 mm about 20 psi 2.35 Tyres.

I'll look at your suggestion thanks
