When building a bike, I always seem to be running out of cable housing ferrules. Quality ferrules are a nice touch. I am going to buy a bunch,s o started looking at several options.

The brass ones look nice.

shimano sealed ones are very good. i got nearly a year out of a rear cable running them. they have a small O ring inside them, and it seems to do a fantastic job of sealing the housing.

the downside, is the shimano sealed ferrules are hard to find..good bike shop mechanics tend to hoard them and not give them up easily...

and they are plain black, plastic.

The plastic fibrax ones i have are the same, bought a tub of 100 for not a lot.
Work perfectly and do the job. The inside has a metal section so the metal end of the cable do not go through it.
I'm sure I don't use o-ring sealed on brakes though, there would be too much friction for light feeling brakes.
But for now I'm using whatever has come with my clarks pre-lube dirt-shield which look much like the metal coloured ones above
