WOW.
I stay home sick and ignore the computer for One Day?!? And This!?
I'll make two simple observations.
1st - VRC has its place. I check it out every once in a while, but in all honesty, I've never been a subscriber to the idea that the MTB was born on Mt Tam, so the core group over there isn't targeting me as a participant, and I don't have a problem with that. I think that's what attracts me to Retrobike, the idea that the west coast MTB is only one approach to the mountain bike, and that there are plenty others. I like east coast stuff like EWR. I like BC stuff like Brodie and Toad. I don't think I'd by a Cunningham or an old Potts even on the cheap. Not that they're bad (certainly they are NOT), rather I'm just not interested in it. (OK, I could buy it cheap and then sell the snot out of it on eBay...I guess I'd buy it for THAT!
) VRC is centered around that California culture as being the only retro culture. Its a 'solar system' theory that I just don't subscribe to. There's something truly interesting about reading about StarTrek's Anlen or the myriad of Orange Clockworks or Prestiges, and in no small part that's because I don't have to listen to all that overblown 'father of the mountain bike' BS. As a little girl, my mom used to ride a Swiss Army surplus ballooner around the hills of southern Maryland, a bike that my grandfather cut and welded on. He wasn't the father of the mountain bike either.
2nd - There are VRC members who can't seem to recognize that the way they treat people on their board has a potential corelation to auction participation. There are items that come up on the old fleabay that are being sold by folks who I think just treat others badly, (even if it is in jest). I'm not sure I understand that logic. :? I'd like to think that I'd never say anything so mean to somebody, even as a joke, that they'd think twice about bidding in an auction of mine. I know for a FACT that my disdain for Kooka makes my auctions for Kooka stuff go on the cheap, so folks are watching.
Don't pound on each other too much, everyone. It's only the internet.
