Tyre Question.

I have a Marin IFT 96 26" wheels etc, as I'm doign more road stuff now due to the daily commute I'm look at getting some Conti Sportscontact.

Also does anyone know if they are "that" deadly in the wet?

Now they come in two sizes 26x 1.3 or 26 1.6, Can I put both of the sizes on my rims or is the size specific t different wheeltypes?

Also quite happy for recommendations for other slick/ish tires, size answer is what I'm after though

I used SportContact in the summer, but didn't feel confident enough in the winter so changed to Schwalbe Hurricane.

Good tyres though, nice a quick :twisted:

what rims are on your wheels? most rims have a minimum tyre width they recommend fitting, but I think at 1.3 or 1.6 you should be ok with the majority of MTB rims. I *think*.

I can reccomend the Schwalbe City Jet in 26x1.5, roll fairly well, good in wet or dry, good puncture protection, cheap enough, they do them in blackwall or skinwall.

I run a set on my kona.....super quick and useable in the wet so long as you are conscious of your small contact patch and don't ask too much of them on wet roundabouts......road bike styleeee!....

I've had a Sport Contact on my tourer / general runaround for 3 years or so. It's OK but can definitely get frisky on wet drain covers etc. It was bad when new, but now the grooves are just about gone it's fine. I suspect that the release agent on the tyre is the problem - after 500 or so miles it seems it improved.

My favourite is the Hutchinson Top Slick 1.2 - it's actually a bit wider than the Conti, and grips really well.

As for tyre size, above 1.4x the rim width is ideal, don't go lower or you get a very harsh ride. 1" on a 18mm wide (between bead hooks) rim was very harsh.

Plus one. Used them for most of my daily riding for probably 6 winters.

I use Sportcontacts 1.6, I think they are fantastic tyres. I've never had any problems with them even in the wettest weather - it takes a bit of time until you realise how much you can trust them.

I use them everyday (well, not now tbh - it's light in the morning so I go off-road route to work) on poor quality tarmac, gravel bridleway, a bit of wood track (with a lot of mud when wet) - they have never let me down, even they are purely tarmac tyres.

Brilliant traction, even when it's pissing down. Highly recommended

If you start getting punctures in them it means they are due to replacement. I did about 6000 miles on mine.
