Thick as Thieves

C'mon, man! This is retrobike! The correct answer is a pair of Spesh Hardlocks.
View attachment 991140*I dunno if they are actually theft proof but I've been using them both for decades, never a bike stolen or harmed in the attempt
These would last around 5 or 20 seconds in Bristol

Usually twisted until it bursts -
bare hands only required.
But a cable cutter will nibble through in about 25 seconds.

This kind of lock is maybe ok where you don't have professional bike thieves.

They don't care anymore. Rock up with a battery grinder in Broad daylight and take 60 seconds to destroy any lock. It's why I also go with making it look unworthy of the effort or two locks, so the bike next to it looks easier. 🤣

60 seconds will do 3 locks.
The police know who the thieves are here though, so they can't "go equipped".
Spot a bike, then go get the tools.

but Angle-grinder man
(Homo Molendi Angulare) is interested in the big money.

Crappy retrobike e-stays ubrake in flouro livery is of little interest to him or his fence. 😉

Spesh Ebike, however...
muggers on the cycle path.

Cutting 2 locks is twice the work,
Also visibly marked frame means it's hard to pass off as legit without extra work, which depresses the saddle value.

I was scoped by a pair of thieves last week on a 4k trek ebike - that's what they are really after.
2 kiddies in balaclavas on an e- motorbike riding around the pedestrian bridges and tunnels under the M32. Lucky for me I was exiting in the opposite direction, but I'll stick to the road if I'm on a similar piece in future

I wouldn't mind finding a Wedlock either.View attachment 991142
An additional benefit of this style of lock is extra "reach" in a 4wdConfrontation style situation, if you know what I mean.

You can swiftly reduce excess 4wd width by
"mirror removal from a safe distance"
and although safety goggles and a secure exit path are as necessary as chainsaw operation, helmet optional in this case😉

On his way in to work this morning, my colleague actually saw a scumbag attempting to smash a lock off the frame in this way.

How often do they succeed?

Halfords lock on an apollo? but these things are ruined before they even get to the city centre.

Truly, we are facing
The Moron Apocalypse!

A friend of mine got his bike nicked from his front garden - they sawed an inch section off the middle of the top tube as presumably they couldn't get through the D lock. Could affect the resale value.

I've seen that, most often where 2 bikes are locked together, the cheap one is cut through, but also where a bike has fancy components - usually mtb.

If it's got something worth more than the sum of it's parts, the other parts are worthless and therefore fair game.

also harder to sell on a full bike than it is parts.
