The accidental 94 Kilauea

boxxer

MacRetro Rider
Was chatting to a mate not long ago who was clearing some stuff out.

“You love that old crap, you want my dads old bike?”, me “ maybe what is it?” “It’s a Kilauea, rough shape and incomplete but it’s yours for £50”

“deal”

So I go to pick it up sight pretty much unseen and I’m happy straight away, it’s a 19” - would have preferred smaller but it’ll be an XC whippet anyway

Bad points, Seat bridge and chainstay bridge are rusty, there is some crazing on the paint and it has a load of aftermarket stickers and it’s missing the seat lamps and dog link for the cantis

Good points, Syncros seatpost, Cattlehead (flip) and bars, XT wheels on 517 (cracked but I have a ton of 517’s in the garage) XT 737 with UN72 bb, Impact headset and XTR V brakes and Levers.

So I have a 737 rear mech and cassette sitting spare along with V brakes and a side from chain / cables / grips / front mech and the seatclamp I shouldn’t need to find very much else.

My first Kona and it should be a good un’

Re:

Sounds good, how you gonna run V-brakes without a cable stop at the rear though? Full length outer? Band on cable stop? Or some other trickery?

Also...

Re: The accidental 94 Kiluea

Now I have the very thing, found today in my toolbox, blue anno called “the backstop” which I bought for a C16R in 96 and then kept when I changed to Magura so one less issue...

Let me grab some pics

You can use a later Kona guide drilled out to fit v’s - have a look at my bike.

Re:

Progress comes, rebuilt the rear wheel last night, the 517 CD had a serious crack habit and was wafer thin on the sidewalks so an old 517 was drafted in to replace, made quicker by use of an electric drill, will send to my wheelbuilder for a true along with a few others...

Next up to find a seatclamp and mechs (shouldn’t be too hard), also found my old 740 shifters and 739 V’s so will chuck them on too...

Any progress on this and what did you do about the rust?

Will be good to see it up and running again.

Mark

Rob you could have posted a link instead of turning it into an epic quest

After tons of trawling pages I found this - on your completed build
Interesting idea - does it work okay as the brake arm has to move and the flex in that short run of cable can’t be a lot
