Crikey, I have never seen so many MacRetro types outside the womb before

ZigZag old mate, I don't think it's about being snobby or being above anyone. It's about provoking a raising of standards. How many people say they cannot afford a top end bike when the signature below has a dozen low to mid range bikes in it??

As a Yank once said ' Why have a dozen Yugo's when you can have one Porsche'

I don't think Pete or anyone wants to lose the all inclusive nature of RB, just get people striving for better, aspiring to something special. It really saddens me when I read ' My dream bike is a Marin'.
Here's the thing, though - I don't think I ever had a "dream bike".

I like reasonable spec bikes, and as it goes, bikes from BITD. Beyond that, I never have, nor ever will, see the point in kitting out a mediocre rider - me - in anything other than mediocre kit.

Retrobike, to me, isn't purely about the bikes, or about high-end kit, it's about an era, for me, it's about nostalgia and memories. That, and continuing to run bikes from the era I personally prefer.

That may not be seen as aspirational, to some - but like I care. I'd much rather be aspirational about how good I could cycle, as opposed to what's the bestest, exotic, history-laden, high-end bit of kit I could pedal around on, and look totally clueless, because I was never, nor ever will be, and elite rider.

As to the Mustang - I owned one in the 80s. Am I defensive about that? Hell no. They were what they were, and still are what they are. The one thing I would say, though, about bikes like the Mustang - sure, perhaps they are no more than BSOs from BITD. That said, BSOs from BITD > BSOs from recent years. Not because of their age, simply because low end things from BITD were still better made than the supermarket bikes of today, even if they weighed more than an anvil.

i like bikes.

all bikes.

i like old bikes .

i like new bikes.

i like bso's. (they pay the mortgage)

and interestingly one of the most highly anticipated and commented on bikes is a marin bear valley.

I'll always remember what a mate said years ago , " deore is good enough for me " . I didn't get it back then but sure do now as he was no slower than the rest of us with xtr and much shinier stuff .

I can't see the problem in having a site that covers all retro bases. :?

I have little interest in bikes made before 1988 or after 1995.
I have little interest in top or bottom end brands I've never heard of.
I have no interest in road bikes and very little in bmx's.
I have little interest in brands I didn't care for bitd.
I could go on......

Thing is, no one forces me to open threads about stuff mentioned above so I often don't. If I see a bike I like on here I will post a positive comment, if a bike doesn't float my boat I leave the comments for others.

Don't really see what the huge issue is? :D

Neither do I. And for bikes that I remember as being poo I don't want to read about, well then I skip the thread until all you other guys build it to 4+ pages...like now! I'm sure that some folks don't understand my Toyo Triplets, but that's fine. Cheaper for ME! 8)

Because you dont look like a prick driving a Yugo?? :?

If that wasnt so long i'd have it in my signature - that has made my week!

Steve McQueen and James Dean drove Porsches.

Gap toothed inbred Yugoslavian peasant farmers drove Yugos.

Nice to know which camp you prefer.

I'd MUCH rather buy something from a proven manufacturer than those genuine BSOs that I see people buying every day when I get my lunch from ASDA. They just look plain dangerous and the sort of thing that has a miserable life outside, rusty chain etc until one day something snaps and you see it in the skip at the local 'amenity centre'.

That said, I wouldn't bid for the Mustang if my life depended on it because of the previously said snobbery. Internet cycling forums are full of snobs, it's just we're old bike snobs rather than the latest 'bling/pista/track/fixie' type snobs
