Here's the thing, though - I don't think I ever had a "dream bike".Dr S":absgirp6 said:Crikey, I have never seen so many MacRetro types outside the womb before
ZigZag old mate, I don't think it's about being snobby or being above anyone. It's about provoking a raising of standards. How many people say they cannot afford a top end bike when the signature below has a dozen low to mid range bikes in it??
As a Yank once said ' Why have a dozen Yugo's when you can have one Porsche'
I don't think Pete or anyone wants to lose the all inclusive nature of RB, just get people striving for better, aspiring to something special. It really saddens me when I read ' My dream bike is a Marin'.
I like reasonable spec bikes, and as it goes, bikes from BITD. Beyond that, I never have, nor ever will, see the point in kitting out a mediocre rider - me - in anything other than mediocre kit.
Retrobike, to me, isn't purely about the bikes, or about high-end kit, it's about an era, for me, it's about nostalgia and memories. That, and continuing to run bikes from the era I personally prefer.
That may not be seen as aspirational, to some - but like I care. I'd much rather be aspirational about how good I could cycle, as opposed to what's the bestest, exotic, history-laden, high-end bit of kit I could pedal around on, and look totally clueless, because I was never, nor ever will be, and elite rider.
As to the Mustang - I owned one in the 80s. Am I defensive about that? Hell no. They were what they were, and still are what they are. The one thing I would say, though, about bikes like the Mustang - sure, perhaps they are no more than BSOs from BITD. That said, BSOs from BITD > BSOs from recent years. Not because of their age, simply because low end things from BITD were still better made than the supermarket bikes of today, even if they weighed more than an anvil.
