SBDU Ilkeston 531 Randonneur 1985 SB7660

I already have a 753 SBDU Randonneur from 1985 with number SB7657, so when this one with number SB7660 popped up, only 3 numbers apart, I couldn't resist. SBDU made 2 models of Randonneur, one in 753 and one in 531, so this completes a set. This is the 753 frame I got a little while ago viewtopic.php?f=23&t=301772

This one has a great mix of components, Campagnolo Record, Weinmann, Cinelli, Stronglight, TA, Wolber, Brooks, Simplex and Suntour.

The paint and decals are in excellent condition and matches the colour on another SB frame I have, SB7219, a 531 Pro Super. viewtopic.php?f=12&t=248475

Some new grease, cables and tyres should sort it.

Cheers
Neil

Re:

I know nothing about '80s bikes  but I love the look of this one. Can't wait to see it built up! 8)

I was really tempted to bid on this but only wanted the frameset not the full bike.
The seller didn't know what size tyre it would take with guards fitted so I didn't bid.

Still interested to know the max tyre size it will take with mudguards.

I'll let you know next week. It came with some 25mm tyres fitted to the Wolber rims but I'll check clearances soon. I only placed one bid on it and no one else did!

I saw you got your bid in early and was surprised no one else bid.
I'm interested as to whether it is a race bike with added mudguard fittings or did they allow for bigger tyres.

Got this bike stripped down tonight and gave it a very quick degrease to remove the sticky packaging that was all over the tubes. The paintwork is amazing. It's hard to capture the deepness of the red in these quick phone pics.

The colour does look good, really wish I'd bid on it now.
If you decide that two Randonneurs is one too many let me know.

Re:

Very very nice.

Pity it's a new acquisition as I would have liked to have featured it in my book on the SBDU.

That's a shame Jon.

I couldn't resist putting SB7657 (753 Randonneur) & SB7660 (531 Randonneur) side by side again after 30 years apart. Both frames only 4 frames apart & probably built in the same week at Ilkeston in 1985 and somehow both now back together.

I'll hopefully get some time next week to start putting it back together!
