Dear trusted Retrobike MTB fellows.

I am in the process of rebuilding a 1986 MTB, but really don't want to be using 1986 pedals, namely clips, straps etc. In the past I bought another bike around 1990 I changed to clipless when they were available.

So I am looking at clipless, probably early time style (I have the cleats etc).

Does anyone have any info on earl-ish MTB racers / users of clipless, what they were using etc?

Is this actually illegal and against the law and punishable by prison in retrobike countries?

Thanks

D

BITD if enough folk thought something was a good idea they jumped on the bandwagon and upgraded. So SPD's, V-brakes, suspension are all seen on bikes that predated the technology. There is nothing wrong with it, only an elitist snob would have an issue and they're best ignored

I have some ATAC's which I can use, but I was hoping to find something a little more 'fitting' and correct I guess.

BITD I just had a set of basic time pedals on the MTB but of course the shoes weren't as varied as today, and perhaps I can jig something up with a more modern shoe.

Just a thought really, I am just no longer a fan of clips for the sake of it.

the first clipless mtb pedals were shimano 737 . Look also had an early model very similar to their road pedal .

hear hear!

I use SPD 979s on my 1985 Overbury's, I was clips and straps up until then. First introduced in 1991, so not far out.

Some of the French Paris Dakar riders used Look road pedals with road shoes way back in 1987, then the SR2 in about 1992, copying the M979 to some extent:

and there was an off-road version of the Look Delta road pedal, with a toothed plate on the underside and a cut-away cleat for mud clearance. Never seen these in the flesh though, probably around 1990.

Have you seen Speedplay's museum of clipless road pedals? Road pedals http://www.speedplay.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=pedalmuseum.clipless

All the best,

All the best,

Thanks for this, the look pedals look cool. I have seen the museum, my first thought was time, mostly because I have some. I also have some SPD's which I have never tried so will have a try with them as well.

Thanks to all for the info.

Hmmm, what's best....a bike sat in a garage or on a wall with period sorrect pedals or a bike out doing waht it was designed to do. I know what gets my vote!
Most retrobikers I ride with ride modern pedals, so I would just fit whatever you're comfortable with and ride the damn thing :D
