I empathise with the sentiment of 'I would have upgraded to SPDs when they came out' as by and large thats what happened, however there are two things to consider. Firstly, and most pertinent to this build, if you had this bike (built in 86) but kept up with the trends/advances and benefits in technology, would you not have upgraded your wjole 5 year old MTB by the advent of clipless pedals. Thirdly, if we are to extrapolate that idea of an evolving bike, then surely we just get to a point whereby you are in the here and now riding a modern bike.
Its entirely personal, but I aim to build a bike to be period correct at its time of inception, rather than picking a year from a bikes history and making it fit to that. Its fun to ride these things as intended, and why not, despite what you may be told by What MTB not everyone requires 140mm of travel, disc brakes and 2x10 gearing.
