S.O.L.D ! ! ! *Original* GT Urm! NOT Zaskar for sale.

Genuine Q - is not the frame number definitive? A number of sources suggest that first four digits give the year/month. If so, then an "S" and an "E" are presumably "wrong"?

My son had an Avalanche c. 8-9 years ago, which I always assumed was basically a Taiwan built Zaskar - it was certainly very nice and to my mind just as a good as a Z.

This is not a Zaskar, could be a Backwoods, Pantera or anything if it's been stripped and polished

This is what the back end of a Zaskar look like

And this is what the serial number looks like

There was a rumour that some Taiwanese post Y2K frames had the curved end cap but I haven't seen any. What I will say is that although it's not a Zaskar it is still looks a half decent ride. Get rid of the twist grips and away you go, BUT it aint a Zaskar

I'll have to check the rear hanger numbers as the one's supplied are from the under the bottom bracket.

I'm sure early Zaskar's I've seen in addition to whatever mine is supposed to be don't have the additional collar welding. Although I'm a little confused as to what the difference is between the photo of the rear posted and the other image of a Zaskar posted. Perhaps someone could modify the image to show?

Cheers,

the end cap of the top tube should be flat, not curved, period.

snot a zaskar and snot 18", apart from that its ticketyboo :?

hey desmobob,

i feel like i'm adding to the feeling of ganging up on you, and i don't mean to, i used to sell gt bikes back in the day, the gt logo on the downtube reminds me of a 97ish backwoods, which were if i remember correctly the first year model without the canti mount around the seat tube.

the very obvious way to detect whether this is a zaskar, regardless of year model is to check the rear drop out for "7005" or "6061", theses are the tubing grades and are marked on the inside(?) i think of one of the drop outs. if it has 6061 on it. it is very likely it is a zaskar but otherwise then it isn't.

personally i think it is a backwoods.

sorry. :(

p.s defo a 16", they measured centre to centre, centre to top is 18 but that isn't how the were measured. quite a common mistake.

It's not an 18? No way! I'm 6' 2" and my inside leg is longer than a 747's wingspan yet I can lockout my leg with a 280 seat post fitted, (with plenty of metal left in the seat tube to prevent flairing).

How strange, so baiscally what I've been led to believe is a Zaskar is in fact a total bag of sh1te.

Still don't understand the 27.0 seat tubing tho, perhaps it's reamed out 26.8.

My Zaskar is a 1996 produced in October i.e. 1096198616. There are no serial numbers on the BB Shell. The Bikes of this era with BB sited Serial No's are the like of the Pantera and Backwoods.

The Zaskar will also have 6061 stamped on the dropout, just like this on mine

You are mistaken if you still believe you have a Zaskar. Still it's a GT which to some is 'ok', but to me is 'COOL'

didn't say it was a shopping bag of poo, those frames are bombproof!! regardless of model. my guess is that you are right in thinking the seat tube has been reamed out.

bear in mind the way GT measure their bikes though, their 16 is like most other companies 18 so being 6'2 running a very long post as you are then i'm not suprised it can be made to fit. also they were quite long in the top tube.

Probably best you found out here though
Might have been sold on Ebay and then had loads of agro from an unhappy buyer.

Wouldn't be the first time someone posted a pic of their new ride on Retrobike and then had its true identity revealed

These things happen and no one thinks its dishonest, just a genuine case of mistaken identity
