Ritchey Softtail 21 at MTB-News.de - Now with link!!

Lovely ride, apart from: Shite paintwork; The various forks I tried tended to touch the downtube rather than go underneath so a crash could be quite messy; Shock is a chunky spring with zero sealing so left could rust.

Thanks for the info Phil, :)

Did you btw try any ridgid forks with your Ritchey, or just suspension ones? Did the softtail make any noticeable difference in the rough (compared to a "normal" steel hardtail), or is it just a cool gimmick?

(the frame size would be just right for me..)

I have a Dekerf softail. The spring really does make a big difference- to climbing rooty, rocky bits, and to allday in the saddle comfort. It doesn't seem to stop you getting the power down at all. It sprints just as well as a hardtail.
Maintenance isn't really a problem. A full strip down and lube takes about 20 mins once a month or more in mucky weather.

I googled Dekerf softtail, nice bikes, didn't know too much about them before.

Maybe I'll have to reconsider the Ritchey...

A nice Ritchey softtail for EUR 260. Looks to be in good nick!

I was tempted to make an offer, but I'm not sure about the longetivity of the softtail shock. Anybody got experience with these?

Sorry for the missing link(!)

I have first hand experience of this shock,as I used to own this frame.

The shock consists of a spring and a bump stop, thats it. You can put more pre-load on the spring by winding it in/out at the bottom. Take spring out and clean/grease put back in two minutes. :D

Thanks, nice to get some info from a former owner :)

Seems like the construction is simple enough, and shouldn't cause any problems.
