Retrobikers trip to Pyranees? Whose game...

I am dead serious about this. I have some time off work coming up after August, and have a desire to travel and do as much as experiential stuff in the time as possible. Doing a cycling trip to the Pyranees interests me, but with a retro spin to it, so early 90's and under bikes. Is anyone here interested in doing the same, as I am not too keen on going on my own and would love to meet fellow retro cycle enthusiasts too...? Would be anytime in August or September.

C'mon, Col Du Tourmulet with downtube shifters, quill stems and Rolls saddles doesn't appeal? :)

Too many tourist buses on the Tourmalet. Far nicer, far prettier is the Aubisque: been there; lovely.

How long? A week? 2 weeks?
Fly or drive down?
Touring bikes all panniered up or race bikes with minimal luggage & pre-booked accommodation?

I am leaning towards the latter really. All on the cheap where possible. As an example, a cheap hotel near-ish to the Aubisque would be in Argelès-Gazost, prices first weekend of September would be £128 for 3 nights Friday to Monday. Not sure about the ins and outs of flying with bikes yet though, driving may be cheaper in that instance...

This site is good.

Re:

I've got hotels from £38 - £50 per night in the area, I'd join you but I've already planned a motorcycle trip to Sant Sadurni nr Barca to see a friend.

Might be nice to stop nr the Aubisique (which I'll travel up - see image) and meet some Retrobikers...it's the 25th anniversary of my motorcycle trip to the Barca games (1992), where I first saw Chris Boardman.

Re:

First half of September, 2-3 days to get to Barca, no rush. A week there and then home (ferry Portsmouth-Cherbourg-Portsmouth).

Just got back from the Tour de France, went with bicycles, no car.

This may help. Hotel details down the page.

Would be tough on a retrobike.
