Raleigh Dynaflite SBDU 753.... 'Manager Special'

Hubs cut out of the rims today and the Sturmey Archer S5.1 looks to be in really great condition, bearings are showing the original grease and no internal corrosion. The front hub is marked Atom Normandy and is a fairly low end stock Raleigh item, bearings feel a bit rough and notchy so just like new..😖 One of the locknuts crumbled into tiny pieces as i removed the odometer so I'm thinking about a Campagnolo upgrade. Okay I know that it's not original but maybe they just didn't have a spare 36h Campagnolo hub kicking around the SBDU workshop...??

Hang on.
So you’re prepared to keep the consumable protective layer that helps prevent the frame from rusting for the sake of keeping it original (that’s all paint is) but an original component is fair game? Tut tut! 😁

(Personally I’d replace the hub as you suggest but then I would definitely be re-finishing the paint job)

Back in the late seventies as a schoolboy racer I had my first set of sprint's for my homebuilt Claud Butler built by Rotrax Cycles in Southampton. Back then money was tight and all I could afford at the time was the same crappy Atom Mailard Normandy hubs, and crap they were, wish I had waited and saved for something better but the GHS 10mile Championship was looming and I was desperate to race on tubs rather than 27inch HP's. The Campagnolo hub shown is 28 hole which I wanted to compare flange sizes... somewhere I've got a 36hole Gran Sport without the oiler port, I'll keep the original hub with the bike should I ever decide to move it on. I did even consider having two front wheels, one for show and one for riding. I know what your saying about the paint and I would love it to be all shiny and new...it's a tricky one...☺

The Sturmey Archer gearbox has cleaned up really well and is looking like new, with only 70 miles on the clock it's not even run in yet..🕖 I've cleaned and regreased the bearings and cones both sides and fresh oil into the main body. With a 46 X 18 setup I'll have 69inch direct drive gear ratio in 3rd.

I've got a not a Brian rourke I'm planning on doing a gentlemans shopper with, flat bars guards and a rack for practicality. A whole new sub genre of bike building 😊
I am loving the Raleigh, and following with interest .
I’ve built up a Mercian for my other half in a similar fashion a while ago. It’s a really sweet ride, and probably my favourite build ever, as I’ve spent hours polishing everything etc in a zen like state.

That looks great, liking the classic paint and the bars remind me of my old 'Tracker' from the seventies with its cowhorn bars. I see you have Weinmann concave rims, what tyres are you running..? wired or folding..? tyre pressure..?
