Feature Bike
Have been re-assessing my bike needs, and much as I love it, I’m not riding my Randonneur enough; I’d like it to go to a new home.
Full bike as pictured still for sale at £500, but also as frame-set with build options. See the bottom of this post.
It has many quality but discontinued parts (see below) and so offers a chance to get hold of a well sorted classic tourer that would now be very difficult to build up from a frame, which in themselves are getting scarce.
Chances are if you are looking at this that you’ll know how special the 708 Special Products Division Randonneurs are, but check out the background to these bikes on my build thread here.
This one is from 1997, has original paint and is 22 and a bit inches top tube and seat tube. (I normally take a 23” racing frame, and tried a 23” Randonneur but found it a bit big; this set up with a tall stem and a bit of post I find really responsive and stable loaded.) It’s had light use and is not pristine, but is very presentable. (See the pics for condition - I’ve zero’d in on the imperfections.)
I’m looking for £500 as shown with the Brooks Titanium Swift. Touring saddles are personal, so I’d be happy to sell without a saddle for £450, or substitute a new & unused (still on the card) B17 special in tan/copper for the Swift. Now also available as a frameset with build options: see below.
I’d prefer to hand it over in person and am happy to travel a reasonable distance (from York) to meet halfway. If necessary, I could post it, but it might take a while to organise and is unlikely to be cheap (budget at least an extra £50 U.K. for the full bike - I’d obviously only pass on what it costs me, but whole bikes can get pricey. Goodness knows what international shipping is like).
More pictures below along with a list of key components and build options. Do message me if you need more details.
Frameset and build options.
Appreciate that people might prefer to build up a nice tourer their own way, so I’m now offering this as a frame set, with the buyer getting the option to add in components from the full bike. Prices and which components are available shown below.
Pls note, the parts are only for sale as an addition to buying the frame - and only the ones indicated.

Raleigh Randonneur frame and forks built from heat treated Reynolds 708 steel by the Raleigh Special Products Division in 1997. As an SPD 708 frame it has signature oversized seat stay caps, spoke holders on the left chainstay (531 frames have them on the right), and a chainstay “pip” rather than a full chainstay bridge. They were made by the masters with scrupulous attention to detail and quality control. Includes Campag Veloce headset and cable hanger. £200 collected or add £25 postage.
Parts: all prices are without postage, and it should be possible to add them to the frame box, and so be included in that post cost.
Cockpit:
~ Nitto stem and Randonneur bars; Newbaums cotton tape, Dia Compe Gran compe drilled brake levers. + £50
~ Nitto stem (FU-82?) £20
~ Nitto Randonneur bars - 44cm at the corks £20
~ Dia Compe Gran Compe brake levers £20
~ Tektro CR 720 cantilever brakes (discontinued, one of the best designs). £30 f&r with hangers and pads
~ Brooks Swift titanium saddle in Honey. Not included in frame plus parts sale.
~ Twin bolt layback seat post (I think this is from a batch that Planet X got hold of and branded- basically a rebadged Velo Orange Grand Cru). £30
SKS longboard mudguards with factory flaps. These are discontinued and hens’ teeth rare; seriously - I will regret selling these the most. The crème caramel colour really really sets off the blue frame. Not included in frame plus parts sale.
~ Titanium bottom bracket (113mm sq taper JIS made by Token I beleive). £40
~ Velo Orange pedals. Really light and silky smooth - don’t think they’re making them now. Alloy MKS clips and Christophe straps. Not included in frame plus parts sale.
~ Zefal HPX classic pump. Alloy. Discontinued sadly. Best frame pump ever. £30
~ Nitto style wire bottle cages; can’t remember where I got these, but they are solid. £30 for both.
~ Tyres are 33mm Jack Browns - designed by Rivendell and made by Panaracer. Super supple, sadly unavailable in the U.K. I will include a new and unused blue label spare. £60 for the three
~ Dura Ace 9 speed shifters. Nearly new and worth a bomb these days. £90
~ XT 9 speed cassette Not included in frame plus parts sale.
~ Original Campag Veloce headset. Hewn from pure silvery adamantine; will outlast us all. (Included as part of frameset deal)
~ Original Mavic T261 rims on Shimano Parallax hubs. Not included in frame plus parts sale.
~ Suntour XC front derailleur (triple, “top normal”) £30
~ Microshift Silver 9sp rear derailleur £30
~ Sugino Chainset Not included in frame plus parts sale.
Thanks for getting this far.
