You'll have to trust me that up close and in person, it looks worse than the pics. But I'm gonna make it right for him. It'll ride nice. Anyone know any good sources for parts and info on a Rock Shox rebuild?

For what you paid it really doesn't look too bad at all.

Those Rockshox Quadra 21R's are super simple to service too, they'll either just have springs inside, or you can use elastomers from the Quadra 5's.

So apart from an easy shock rebuild what else do you think you need? and is it going back to retro rideable or rideable?

The components are just junky and rusty. The bearings are sht, I can feel the indexes, the cables of course, and the saddle and pedals are crap. In general, it is just lower end than I expecte and dry and rusty. I'll get her up and gong and post my accomplishment for whatever thats worth.

That bike has a lovely frame and some nice components.

Soak the rusty bits in veg oil for a few days then clean them up with some scrubbies/scotch pads. Replace the cables and outers and seat and perhaps the pedals. Grease up everything else and lower the bar ends to be inline with the stem.

And as time and money become available stick on a new chain and cassette and derailers perhaps cranks too. By shopping around we replaced a mates whole gears and drive chain for under £50 including cables - all acera/alivio based. Bike rode like new after that.

It already looks good I think, much better than a $75 walmart bike and it will last longer too.

Thanks for the reply! I have some pretty nice LX components I was considering donating to the cause. I'm torn between trying to see how good I can make it with the shimano exage 500 components that are on it (it does have old XT shifters) or just giving him the LX and sending the Exage to the bone yard.

$75...even if you end up with just a sound cannondale chassis that doesn't seem that bad? i'm guessing worst case you can split it and ebay the bits to easily cover the cost.

Stem, seat post look nice too. how much are entry level tyres in the states? $20..a pair?? well looks like you have set of those on there. So your getting the rest for $55

I'm sure your frustaration is probably more from wanting to get somthing nice for your lad, get home and give him it.

A stylus and others have said... why not get it running rough and then when funds allow you can upgrade with your lad as part of the fun.

So I took inventory. It's not Exage.. I don't know what I was thinking. The kit is as follows:

Shimano Acera X FD-M290 and RD-M290
Shimano FC-M290 175mm crank
Shimano Altus SLR cantilever brakes BR-CT90-M
Sovos Wheels (wide rims), bearings seem ok'ish
Ritchey post is kind of nice
XT Shifter/Brake levers STI/SLR ST-M090

Chain shot, rings and cogset could possibly be saved.
Aheadset Diacomp USA 1" threadless = shot. Indents in the race. Bumpy when you turn it.

We're going to bring her back to life! I'm thinking try to do good by the parts it came with. My son learned how to spot a bad bearing race today. It was a good night.
