Mods please move, delete or whatever and not after your job honest, but wouldn't want anyone here to get caught out

It has come to our attention that a scammer is targeting internet forums that have classified areas. Please read this carefully and DO NOT become a victim of such criminals.
Basically, the scammer is watching the classified sections and waiting for someone to make an offer on an item, which is then refused by the seller. The scammer then registers with a user name almost identical to that of the seller and simply adds a full stop, underscore, or similar.
A PM is then sent to the prospective buyer suggesting a change of heart, accepting the offer, asking for payment and sending bank details. The forum concerned has handed over all this information to the police and hopefully this individual will be stopped, BUT that doesn’t mean someone else won’t try the same thing. The scammer in this case used all manner of free internet hotspots so it’s easy to see how it can be done.

we had that a few months ago when there were I think a .JeRky and .Orange71 who registered... thankfully spotted before they did anything (someone's sharp eyes - might have been Jez).

There was a whole raft of them about 6 months ago. Id spotted about a dozen dubious new user names like JeRkY, .JeRkY, Orange71 etc whilst getting a list of North East and Yorkshire area members together for the Big Weekender. Lord knows what they would have done if they had not been brought to the attention of the mods. The gaffers were swift in closing the accounts down 8)

If they are up to it again be vigilant guys. if you spot anything suspicious just contact the Guvnor. Better to be safe than sorry. And remember, violent crime is still very rare in this country- don't have bad dreams, good night.

yup it was you - sorry, thought it was Jez!

Yeah, I told Jez as soon as I spotted it as he was the only mod around at the time. That dirtbag took all the credit and was given an OBE in the new years honours list. He's now making a fortune on day time telly and has been opening supermarkets and shopping centres around the country ever since. Every dog gets his day though

I'm watching you Hammond!
