BOTM is elitist and rightly so. There is a simple poll and members vote the best, elite bikes..
Of course there are the more iconic brands, that we all wanted bitd and those have theoretically better chance but it can also backfire.. (look at Klein.. it rarely wins.)
Themes are great way add variety and include minorities.

For example after shimano was voted cool i thought the CoolWall lost all credibility and it would be better if only BOTM winners could vote in it.
Those people have objectively some taste. In the matters of taste and cool, the majority is always wrong.

Pretty sure anyone crying elitist is just jealous. I love looking at other people's awesome builds, its inspiring and reassuring that they're able and willing to put serious time and money into preserving these bikes and parts.

The reason I don't vote is I like to see the other side to bikes. The ones that tell the story. Not stories of how long it took to find a mint xyz part. Mines been built to look/perform the best from what I want from it and what I can justify. I think reading about bikes which are commuted on are generally the best at this. The reason I like old bikes is how they look, but to get them to perform I use modern parts, so yeah it's got a hollow tech crank, it's a 2x9 drivetrain and it's got modern tyres, if it had shifters I don't like using and tyres that didn't perform as well I wouldnt ride it. It's scratched because I ride it, not because I don't love it.
With old road bikes I think down tube shifters are sexy as hell but I just can't ride properly with them so if I built another (although I'm loving mtb's ATM) it would look old at a glance but would be 700c with brifters so I would like using it.
Should botm have another category? Maybe. I'll not win anything really, even though I love it, possibly more so than some winners. I'll stick to reading the projects thread for now
