Won the Tour a few times back in the day. Thinking of giving it a try again next year.

Classic, best post yet!

On mentioning Rother Valley (the one near Sheffield) in the post above, I remembered I had this photo. Taken in the days of fluo clothing (quite obviously!!). Regrettably I still have most of this and, now I am doing more riding and losing some weight, it is beginning to fit me again.

Should I wear it out in public?

Great pic, funny, dayglo, we have all been there! Yellow and pink, what were we thinking! Schmoo was classic for that.

I was a much better rugby player than rider, BITD, to be honest. Several people I played with went on to greatness.

I discovered beer, bikes and girls. Ho hum.

As to racing, I was pretty hot at BMX when a lot younger, but then had a couple of good seasons of racing SAMS races and the like at Sport class. I then got rather disillusioned at (I think it was here anywhere!) the Land of Nod. Best ever name for a race location!

Basically, was on the start line when a fight broke out over who had the line....At that point, I turned round, left the field and signed on to ride fun class. It had got silly. It was no longer just about racing, just about having fun. Perhaps it all started to go downhill after the Malvern Classics got too big and attracted the thieves and the violence. Sad.

Nowadays? Well, I do things like the SPAM Winter and Summer enduro rides and the odd Gorrick when a few mates are there.

I was never good at anything because I never stuck at it long enough

I did some bmx as a kid and later had a few years in triathlon after years of just riding with the local bike club. I did ok at best.

Did some XC MTB but as mentioned before got hacked off with people riding in a class below they should be. I did a season of the NEMBA series in the DH after getting back into BMX and finding they went well together.

Ten years and lots of spare tyre later I'm riding to get fit...Would like to have a bash at 4x or os bmx

I entered a few races BITD probably ~92 plus or minus a few years.

Dalby, Lincoln not many. Didn't do too bad given I was just having fun. Something like 16th on the first race, probably at Dalby. That and my bike was usually falling to bits even before the ride.

Spent every waking hour riding with my friends though. Around the streets, countryside, paper round (yes I did that on my RM Altitude XTR kitted, lol, but that and working in a Chinese payed for it.), A-Level Physics was mainly biking in the hills.

Back to racing. Was fun for the few races I did, but more fun just riding the tracks and passing people in Dalby while the race was on having not paid.

I just liked to ride and play :)
I was a lot more competitive at Orienteering, but could never be bothered to do that training stuff.

<insert other stuff to end up like the rest>

Uni, stopped biking/sailing/orienteering, had fun, skint, job, wife, kids and back to biking again < when I finally get some time to put it together again >

Amazes me how much you all can remember.

Nice thread.

Sounds like there we have a few class (and formerly class) riders on here. Puts my one and only victory at a local fish and chipper road race into perspective

I'm not in the league as some folk here but I'm still not bad for a part timer. Sadly work and long hours keep me from getting out enough.

Have placed in the top ten in a handful of events and as high as 5th. Darn that particular day, I was running in 3rd spot with 2nd in my sights and only about 10 hilly miles to go when I suffered serious bonk. It was soul destroying to see the fella I'd previously overtaken come by and not be able to do anything about it.

Did alright in the Viking Challenge by getting into the top 50 even though I went on my single speed. In fact I should have been higher placed (in the 30's) but they got my start time wrong by 5 minutes. Still, it's not like I was vying for the podium or owt.

i did one race when i was about 14 (1992-3ish) on my old carrera krakatoa halfords special. hated every second of it. spent the whole time feeling like i was going to puke/faint. eventually came in 15th out of around 30 riders. i'd come dead last now! my mate came second which was cool for him. not so cool was the fact i was his riding partner and i refused to ever race again which put an early end to his career too.
