1992(?) aged 14/15(?) We signed up to a race in Hebden Bridge at Howards 'Hair Team' bike shop! My mate and I rode our 30lbs+ worth of 1991 GT's from Sowerby Bridge to Hebden, we met a lost rider on the way, Richard who along with his mates became our riding buddies. Glad we met some people because the race was a disaster.

Howard!!! Blimey I know him - my mate Keith worked for him around that time, and I did all his races in Hebden on my Kestrel! They were some proper badly organised races :D

Awesome wondered how long it would take. :D

older and wiser, I'm sure there would have been better races to pop my cherry, i wasn't too slow sprinting and out of mud, and reasonably healthy, really just out of my depth and not as clued up as kids doing it proper.

Howards shop was great, nice smells, fit older ladies, and blingy bits and affordable bits. We traded loads of bits with him, he was apretty good egg. Even sold/px'd my old Tequesta Frame and CV-7s.

Later in 92 iirc some kids from my school were involved with a race in Halifax, Mount Tabor way, i watched that one :D

Used to regularly place top ten in local races in the FOD, Mendips etc in the early 90's but like a lot of people here it seems, I grew and XC racing didn't and I got wrapped up in 'life'.

Again, like many other people here, allowing cycling to come third or fourth on my list of priorities is a real regret for me.

I dont know TBH.....

I look at Wiggins winning at the Worlds and Olympics and think 'I was as quick as you once, that could have been me'.......

but then I look at my wife and know that if I'd stuck at racing I'd never have met her and had my kids......

So......no regrets

In a word...no.

Went to one race. Tanners Hatch in Surrey. Shimano series. March 1988.

Didn't even find the venue. Gave up and went home with my Muddy Fox in the boot of dad's car still. Clean.

Clearly the navigation gene ran strong in the family then...

Did a bit of racing in the early-mid 90s with John Moores Uni team. XC and DH. I think they let me tag along cos I made the others look good. :D

My best result was three broken ribs a mashed collar bone and a mild concussion.

My heart was always in all day trail riding though.

Which come to think of it.....was probably a good thing.

I never really gave myself a chance, I jacked it in after about 10 races because I got fed up with all the, "you're not cool unless you';ve got the latest kit" brigade.

In hindsight I should have just raced what I had as hard as I could and p****d all over them! Back then of course I was young and spontaneous! Doh!
