Halfrauds servicing = avoid ?

now put the cassette and lockring back on after servicing the hub.
should the lockring slip when it is tight enough or have they wrecked my threads?

It should tighten up and stop - best way to tighten it is pedal it. If it's still turning it's fooked!

Go back and raise merry hell...

A freewheel would tighten, but a cassette wouldn't? The lockring should be torqued as specified.

:?

i dont get it? you asked them to do it as you didn't know how to do it, yet you got angry that someone didn't know how to do it? at least he gave it a go.

all this halfords bashing gets pretty boring.

Um, if I take something for a retail service for them to do, because I a) can't do it myself b) can't be arsed doing it myself or c) would pay to watch somebody else do it... I expect in taking my money, that they be up for the job, so to speak.

If I was taking my bike to have something done at a bike shop, I'd be expecting more than some monkey having a "go at it", I can do that just fine, and probably fling poo much better.

If I'm paying money, and they're charging for it, and it's a retail operation, I expect a competent job - not an attempt, hoping nothing goes wrong.

I'm guessing here, but I suspect nobody is making stuff up.

The Halfords mega store thing in Plymouth is no good either in terms of tech skills

My bro and I were out cycling and were nearby so popped in so he could pickup a bottle cage and a set of lights for his new (brand new) bike. He wanted to fit them there and then so the lads behind the counter were very accommodating but we found the lower down tube rivnut was turning when we tried to tighten the bolt

So we asked if we could borrow their rivnut gun, not only did they not have one, they'd never heard of them, nor did they think the problem was fixable, they thought the frame was beyond repair(!)

But to their credit they were cool with lending us tools

The bike came from Evan's in Bristol, naturally they are fixing it free next weekend, we'd fix it ourselves but the little bolt won't fully undo

So I guess with Halfords the advice would be: Set your expectations accordingly, like PC World, Comet or whatever, I doubt the guys in there are very well trained or paid

I think its important to remember that the guy is supposed to be a bike mechanic[do you know what that involves ?]
Doesnt matter if you know or dont know how to do something[+ he does]The bike mechanic was suppose to do it and do it correctly FIRST time.

The result of overtightening a cassette lockring is that the freehub will crack at the threads,i can sent you one if you wish to see

Original poster is quite new and to bashing helfrauds it seems, let him vent i say.

My local halfords was a bad start but since then I only use them and no one else

1st time the Saturday boy got hold of my bvse came back worse than it went in

Took it back and had a whinge and the regular chap who absolutely loves retro's got it as it should be, so much so that every bike I have now goes through him

For me my local halfords has been invaluable
