disc mounts on to a retro frame? am i out of order?

so i have mid 90's P7's coming out of my ears at the moment. specifaclly i have 4 of them! 2 are nickel P7's, 1 is a 94/95 that's built with m737 xt and looks pretty original and appropriate spec, the other is 96/97 with 9 speed xt and v brakes, both in very good condition.

i recently bought 2 more, one was nickel but not in salvageable nickel condition so i knew was gonna get painted, it came with an old manitou fork, so i went looking for a rigid F7 fork to match but nothing was out there so i bought a Pace 1" ahead rc31 that would do the job, now my intention was to build this up as a modern hipster style, but then came the second P7, again it's not in the best cosmetic condition but it did come with the matching fork.

so now i've decided that i should do some off the wall thinking because i have 2 original P7 bikes so my logic is i can do the disgusting thing of modifying these ones. now crucially the rc31 is slightly longer axle to crown than the original F7 fork. so on saturday i got out some spare wheels, this is the disgusting bit . . .

700x 35 wheels/tyres fit in the rear of the frame, but not in the F7 fork, but they do fit in the RC31 fork, also, so do 650b x47, so that got me thinking, the F7 fork that came with the most recently bought P7 can get painted to match the other one as it's already at the painter which can be built hipster style and the newer one i'm thinking strip all the unneeded cable mounts/canti bosses off and have disc mount added as the RC31 has disc mounts at which point i can decide how i want to build it, leaning towards a gravel style build

so how disgusting of an idea is this?

It suddenly makes the bikes cool and desirable in stead of hanging on a hook looking like the owner has got too old to cycle

I don't get much retro abuse for it, but the new owners drop in to say how brilliant they are

You'd need an inch and an eighth fit head tube though. Inch and disc is rare and expensive.

I say do it. You have a few and there are plenty of P7's around so i don't see it as anything to stress about. It is fun playing around with and stuff and hot-rodding older frames and doing conversions like discs, 650b, 29", and drops. It would be very different if it was super rare, or had some special historical significance, because that needs preserving but other than that just crack on

Almost any half decent 90's era frame can be made even betterer with a disc conversion.

Any one who knows their old MTB's hopefuly will appreciate this restored and modified example of the ultimate american steel hardtail classic.....certainly not many left as it took me almost a year to find one in this size and outstanding condition!

The twist is that it has been bang up-to-date with modern handling and powerful disc brakes whilst still maintaining it's retro qualities and super sharp handling characteristics...trust me this bike has not been "thrown" together with some fancy names parts fitted just to sell it! The real sacrilege is all those old frames with cantilever brakes not being ridden thanks to the ever-dwindling supply of suitable rims.

Given that the 97 P7 had a disc tab on the rear (one of mine has) then I don't see it as being a big deal. Disc brakes have been around since the early 90's and to have a proper tab and seatstay/chainstay brace put on is just a better (and more permanent) way of achieving what would have been done back in the day with an adaptor kit and torsion arm. If you're going to do it then think about the cable runs and having them add dedicated hose guides to the frame.

Mine has a couple of oversized top tube cable guides you can thread the cable through, but it'd be better if they were the modern style with little clips to hold the cable in so it can be removed without needing to undo the hoses. I ran maguras like that on the frame way back when.

I have an RC31 on my singlespeed P7, and it compliments the frame really well.

See this being done a lot. 100% nothing wrong in doing it if done properly. And opens up the possibility of larger wheels if clearance allows.

As long as it’s nothing rare I’ve personally no issue with it at all. Especially if you have the frame already and can add the mounts yourself.

Wouldn’t add any myself as you can buy a modern frame with disc mounts for very little anyway.

However , there does seem to be a trend of people adding a disc tab , a super cheap 1 x drivetrain and some silly handlebars which is then stuck up for sale for 5x what it’s worth.
