Cracked Rim

I know it's going to end up costing me more than I want to spend to get it done properly

That's always the way innit! Bought these as an alternative to having my rear CXP21 rebuilt (egg shaped and kept pinging spokes) Have the feeling I've been down this road before then :?

My turn to spend 5p...
From the pics, the line that may be a crack doesn't appear to extend onto the braking surface. And from the photos it looks as though the line follows what looks like it could be a ridge from the SUP weld that hasn't been well machined and could have collected some dirt to look like a crack. If it was mine I'd clean it carefully with a toothbrush and flushing/mopping (water, meths, white spirit and cellulose thinners, each used sparingly) and then examine carefully with a strong magnifier and a bright light from various angles.

Agree with LGF and the post above.
It looks like dirt where someone has done a terrible job of grinding the weld down.

Looks to my untrained eye like a stress corrosion crack......... might just be the photo though.

Re:

Thanks all. It's definitely more than a mark though as I can feel it under my nail. Numerous comments along the lines that these rims rarely crack - Is the 'crack' in the silver finish? Have sent Malcolm a quick PM as suggested by MrW.

That doesn't sound good Shaun - in fact it sounds pretty serious: Is it?

Of course if anyone on this forum ever put their location in their profile then the locals could all pop round and disagree...

Re:

Get rid of it for two simple reasons. Firstly you are never going to be sure as to what it really is. Secondly it is going to put a restriction on the pleasure of riding the bike. You can only really drop the brakes and go for it if you know everything is safe and sound. In short cracked or not its going to ruin too many rides and quick descents to put up with. My two Ps worth for what its worth

Upto 7p now I think...

IMHO it's a crack - possibly due to a shoddy weld, but there are two interesting scuff marks either side just above the
braking surface which to me indicates some sort of abuse or someone tried to fix it somehow. It looks like the
crack is spreading around the rim, rather than the braking walls which I assume are thicker anyway.

Soon, somebody will say drill it at the end of the crack and put the sticker back
