You could use one of the hard drives as an external one - either by taking it out and putting it into a separate case or via target disk mode:

'14 models onwards have the ram fixed, some before that are changeable. Same with other hardware. There are plenty of sites online that list which models/years have swapable parts. Also the systems can share workloads, it doesnt double the power of a machine.
