Cable routing help

Please could somebody recommend the best way to cable route my mtb?

Any photos would be a big help.

I'd put rear break wire on the left (looking in the travelling direction), front derailleur in the middle and rear derailleur cable on the right.

Centre - Rear Brake
Right - Rear mech

I was taught to not cross cables.

Cross them over before the headtube or keep them on the outside

I was taught to not cross cables.

They don't cross if you route the front mech cable to the right of the seat tube. I used to own a Mongoose Alta that had the cable stops arranged the same as on the Univega here. It also had the tube thingy to route the rear brake cable through. Here's how the cables were routed:

Hmmm. The rear is odd. The left hand holder isn’t wide enough to fit a ferrule. Nether is the tube that takes the brake around the seatpost.

Shimano Step down ferrules should do the job.
Some early cable stops are too small for standard ferrules.

Could I not slide in some gear cable like the photo and thread the brake cable through that?
