bivvying in the snow

We've had some of the deepest snow I've ever known on the hills 'round here in Matlock; knee deep everywhere and up to your chest in places! Well I couldn't resist the childish sense of adventure, so paid a visit to one of my 'secret' camp spots, dug a bit of a snow hole and bedded down.
A surprisingly cosy night considering temperatures fell to -14 outside. But despite efforts to brush off snow the night before, morning arrived in a bit of a soggy mess. Down sleeping bags and thawed snow don't get along. At all. :?

All in all a lot of fun, and things didn't become quite as 'Laurel and Hardy' as I'd anticipated.
..It's amazing just how good porridge and a cuppa can taste in such beautiful surroundings.....

The few miles trudge home was epically hard though, like wading through treacle. Talk about knackered!

Do yourself a favour and get a cover for that bag!

those bags are good value!

I was using a Terra Nova bivvy, but hadn't reckoned on the baubles of snow stuck to my socks causing such devastation when they'd melted. It's all Hope's fault... everything was going perfectly and I was all tucked up when I realised I'd left the Hope lights hanging on a tree..

At least I didn't need a poo!

:D Sounds awesome. I'm jealous.
not that awesome... one of those, dare I say it, bloke-type-things that's probably better in memory than it seemed at the time.

It's great to wake up somewhere beautiful in the middle of nowhere though, that's what I dig so much about wild camping.

and a Derbyshire bivvy bag too :D (I have a Super Quasar tent)
Yeah, when I bought it I didn't even know they were British! A top company with really great service.

Super Quasar? ..now that is one reliable tent. :D

One of these days I will test out the Ultimate Equipment sleeping bag i have. It's apparently good for serious sub zero temps but every time I have slept in it (even up to mid October) the most amount of clothing I have been able to tolerate has been pants! Sounds like the conditions for it and a real adventure.

Carl.
