We have continued to fly our helicopters(piston engined, our turbine ones are grounded), looking at the blue sky and thinking all was fine. Well check out the pic below of one of our tail rotors. The tail rotor spins much fater than the main rotor so tends to get worn more quickly. Its done about 15hrs flying since the ash has been around, in the bristol area. Waiting on the engineers to confirm it was the ash, but the blades are covered in sticky fine granules.

my former boss' plane was struck by lightning when he was coming in to land at Geneva, he showed me the hole and simply said 'we were lucky...'


commercial pressures are forcing planes in the air, nature will have a go at forcing them back down

Heh...........early tommorrow, the whole of iceland will have disappeared, just a huge kayak floating where it was............ :P
 
richard hammond showed us something similar on his invisible world program i think. with a propellor in the water though, on a boat, he showed how over time it gets pitted and the like
i think it was that program i saw it recently either way :roll:
 
Won't commercial airlines be flying above the ash layer which is at about 20,000ft, so they will only be going through it for a short time during take-off and approach?

i thought that too, as they keep flying above it to film it, i know the film planes arent commercial but same principal
