Any wood stainers/polishers/oilers in?

okay..just a rant..i need one

so last night the butchers block..it is a big one..was buffed to a nice mat sheen..I thought given that it was oil it looked pretty cool.so about 1 am i go to bed and the ex goes to hers about 1/2 hour after me

I wake this morning to see how the shine works in the daylight..the 1/2 hour she went to bed later..she decided to ply on a real thick coat of danish oil..and leave it

I awake now to find the nicely finished butchers block stickier than a teenagers bed and more patchy than a teenagers face

Given that I still have a very long worktop to even start I am not in the best start to the day mood

here's the gem..it's not my house, I am not being paid for this, I've given up my free time ..and when I say something about losing half a morning and staring the day off not in the best mood....it's my fault because I am always grumpy when I do diy!!!

Nothing to do with me knocking myself silly to help her get her house ready for sale whilst she sits in front of a coal fire, smoking and drinking wine from 2pm in the afternoon ignoring the very small job list she was supposed to do...grrrrrrr...there is a reason why exe's are exes..

sorry..rant over

Your EX-girlfriend you say?

yup..I try and keep a positive relationship going with all my exes..never to revisit ..but more to split amecably..I even stay at the ex wifes and new partners on occasion when I'm in the u.k.

Only this particular ex is one of the laziest b**** in the world but wants to sell her place in norfolk to move back south of the river as her kids are now starting to have kids..so I felt why not help?..then you remember why you split from them

Apsolutly no problem whatsoever to sort out :D
1.Take a clean cloth and SOAK in in meths.

2.Wipe over surface till stickiness is gone.
[you may need to re-wet the cloth but thats all. ]

Then put on a couple of more coats. The meths will actually help it to soak deeper into the surface.
Usually many coats of oil are needed as you have to fill the grain to get the best most waterproof finish, this unfortunately takes time to do and for most DIY'ers that isn't viable. At a push you could[given its purpose as a draining board]put on about 5-7 coats :?

The 'proper' way to apply danish oil is to follow an old rule.

Once an hour-For a day
Once a day-For a week
Once a week-For a month
Once a month-For a year
And once a year-For the rest of it's life.

30 coats of Danish oil is not unusual in professional cabinetmakers workshops :D
Tedious

Thanks chap,

worked a treat. She is now very absent hiding in the lounge whilst i continue onto the kitchen worktop. It's not brilliant but better than it was and certianly less of a worry when the house goes up for sale..will post some pics when fully finished

again thanks all for the input
