Any phone line experts out there?

I have a BT phone line, BT phone and a fax machine. I'm trying to get the settings so that the phone rings and some kinda device recognises after a few seconds whether it's a fax or not and then directs the signal accordingly.

Anyone able to help? I won't go into greater detail until somebody stands up.

Grateful for help but no 'wild guesses' please ..... we've tried every combination of plug, sockets, splitter, settings that we can find.

Can't you employ an extremely attractive secretary to do this for you?

I would have though the fax machine would do that for you . Plug the fax machine forst on the line and phone off the fax machine .

( and yes it is a guess )
