Ps is the tree definitely dead/going to die? Nature is an amazing thing and it might still recover.

I second that. I have a big apple tree in the middle of my garden. I hate it  been trying to kill it off for ages. Bloody thing is still going strong

Cant rember who posted about brake fluid. Most brake fluid (or car paints) arnt effected by this nowadays. You'll have to try resting a hammer on it instead 8)

Ringo is right.
If the tree dies, plant something else that will offend him more.

Can you be sure the drill holes werent there before you bought the house? Is the fluid perhaps sap?

The holes are all relatively fresh and the fact that the tree has died in the places exactly where the holes have been drilled is proof positive. I'm a gardener by trade, I know what I'm talking about!!! No one else has ever complained about the tree, apart from our next door neighbour who has, over the years, repeatedly told my wife to cut it down, not reduce it or cut it back, but remove it entirely. The tree was put there by my wife approx 15 years ago when the next door neighbour built a conservatory with a 10 foot wall behind it (without consulting any of his neighbours), which has blighted our views as well as the neighbours the other side ever since. When the tree got big enough to interfere with our neighbours view from his conservatory, guess what?!? The bullying started, my wife being told to cut the tree down!! It's alright for him to ruin our views but as soon as we try and improve ours (i.e. not look at a brick wall) we have to do something about it! They have lived in this row of houses for years and seem to think it's alright to just walk in and out of peoples gardens (they (he) has been caught doing this numerous times) and do what they like!!!

The problem is there really isn't anyone to complain to that would actually do anything - Police? Forget it! Council? Forget it! He's going to get a taste of his own medicine.

Sounds like a strong case for an asbo application. I thought you had trespass laws in England. Also did he get planning permission for the conservatory?

Some photos for you to consider....

Oh my god! That really is completely obvious.
In view of your pictures I would now highly recommend contacting citizens advice and/or the Police.

I didnt picture such a big (and handsome) tree, and the bore holes are a disgrace. That guy really and trully needs to be taught a lesson.

In fact, sod this, give me your address and ill come round and sort this joker out

One thing I would say, and hindsight is of course the most wonderfull thing, but you should never have let him get away with a 10ft wall without permission.
Check, double check, and triple check the planning regulation laws and find out if you and your neighbours have any rights in forcing him to remove his building.
Although I expect very much that youve left it too long to be able to do anything about it.

By law any extensions or out buildings must not exceed a certain footprint, must not overlook and must not go above a certain height. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can exact the ultimate revenge and have him forced to knock down his building.
If all else fails I would (legally) build something that obstructs his view far worse than your lovely tree did.

Im livid myslef after seeing the evidence for myself. I feel your pain.

......you can bet your bottom dollar he'll return when he thinks its safe to add more poison......

There you go. Invite him into your garden to see the holes in the tree. Then beat the sh!t out of him. He was trespassing and you felt threatened. He has a history of trespassing according to the neighbours.
